Today I was introduced to a web site that allows you, in a short period of time to create a video. The video can be about anything, have one or two ‘actors’ involved in it, and you can do all sorts of really cool camera work and direct the actors… It is some AMAZING technology. Could this be the beginning of the end for actors, or even voice actors?
View the video below… I continue my thoughts directly after it.
As I said above this is really amazing technology, and it’s in it’s infancy. It will only get better and better as time passes. What does this mean for those of us who on occasion get in front of the camera, or read a script? For now, nothing. It’s cool, it’s amazing (as I’ve said many times before), but I don’t think it will replace actors, or voice actors. It will be a supplement. But as you may have heard, the speech is stilted, rough, yet understandable, and has very little variety. A long way from the first computer generated voices, and that is why I say that with time it will only get better.
If you’re an actor, or voice actor, what are your thoughts on this?

The Fox late night show “Red Eye” has been using this for several weeks to parody various topical news issues. It certainly is an interesting “Toy” for now. It will be more interesting to see how the technology develops and how – or if – it finds a home in on-line training… or anywhere else.

Science fiction writers have long ‘predicted’ the rise of ‘AI’ or artificial intelligence in their futuristic stories. Robotics in manufacturing has already improved quality and efficency of many products we take for granted.
Is this brave new world inevitible? Or merely a pipe-dream?
Of course I vote for real human talent. There are a lot of things that scientists come up with that will dazzle the mind yet turn out to be impractical.
All we can do is to ‘raise the bar’ and push ourselve to work at a higher level. If technology will replace ‘human’ performance in the years to come, we should not lay down a play dead now. We should not make it ‘easy’ to be replaced by machine. If the ‘fear’ of such a device forces us to work harder, maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.
