Boy, wouldn’t that be great to have an email account from the US Postal Service? It would, but they don’t have it… yet…
And speaking of the USPS they are in the news again. They are in another financial bind. No surprise really.
Our means of communication has dramatically changed in the last 10-15 years. No longer do we count on the postal system to deliver our letters. It happens instantaneously. No longer are most of our children encouraged to write letters on paper to send to their cousins, or grandparents… we send email.
The postal system still works, and works well. For example I ordered a couple of DVD’s and the seller sent them USPS. The delivery range and rate were for 5-7 days. I got the package in 2. That’s efficiency! I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. The Post office may be in financial troubles, but hey they WORK.
The USPS should really look at diversifying. Adding something other than the physical packages, letters.. They should offer an official email service. The possibilities rock!
Just think, you could have a secure email address that is verified to be your address. Just like a P.O. Box. To get a P.O. Box you have to have a residence in the local USPS area. No postal address, no box. Something similar could be done with email.
Make it a closed system so you would only get email from other USPS email accounts, or email accounts that you chose to. No more random spam. Have the email encrypted so it’s safe. Allow users to send email and turn it into a regular letter to be delivered to an address (They print and send it… would be much quicker!).
There are so many more things that could be done by the USPS in the digital space, they really need to consider it. I would happily pay 5 to 10 dollars a month for a secure, reliable and verified email account… less spam, more protection.
In the year 2000 the USPS was considering some type of digital diversification… read about it here:
