You know, I have to think about why I’m writing in my blog some days. I’m sure if you have a blog, you might be thinking the same thing as well at times.
It seems that I happen to have one of the most interesting domain names out there. When people ask for my email address I pipe up and say My name at Computers Are Stupid.com. Always good for a chuckle or two, or to break the conversational ice. But that’s about the extent of it…
Originally this domain was to be used for a computer talk show with myself and Dan Gookin, Mr DOS for Dummies… We used to do a show together on occasion in San Diego, 1 hour on the weekends. It was fun, and we hopefully helped some people. We wanted to recapture that, but could never figure out how it would work effectively. I know Dan has helped MANY many people… he writes books to enable people to learn about computing. Me, I don’t. I do a lot of other stuff, plus I write this blog.
And here’s where it all ties in. Is my blog performing it’s purpose? I don’t think I ever thought about what the purpose of my blog is.
I think other people use their blogs to drum up business, to share the latest information in their line of work. Or maybe it’s to document their hobby – like a blog on model railroading… like this one here.
I started out before this blog with just a video on the domain that I made with Sony Vegas. And before that it wasn’t anything but a rotating graphic with COMPUTERS ARE STUPID in all sorts of different fonts. I will have to say though, that I got a lot of positive feedback on that video… it is amusing.
I think what really drove me to think about this, and pose the question to you, is a recent article I read in Inc. magazine. It was by Joel Spolsky the founder and CEO of Fog creek software; give it a read here… it was very interesting.
I think that, at all times, what we do is to at least some benefit to ourselves. Whether it is to help us generate PR for ourselves and our business, or to help us feel better by doing something for someone else. Slightly or totally self centered… but that’s the nature of the Human condition.
There are SO many blogs out there, so many people trying to get your attention and pass along their ideas or beliefs, and I am not any different than any of them. But I have to question myself, is what I have to say that interesting, could what I write bring a smile, or give someone some information they might not have had access to before?
If your blog doesn’t have a purpose, it might be good to find one for it. If your blog does have a purpose but doesn’t seem to be performing well, then you need to review what you are doing and focus in more tightly. Unless you really don’t care, then you’re doing just fine!
I’m sure that the purpose of my blog is to allow me to share, to vent, and to help people take notice of things I find of interest. Is it performing it’s purpose… well, maybe… I think I need to get a little more focused myself. And honestly that would be a good thing.
Then most likely I will start to see an increase in readership. And that is always nice.
