I’ve not been writing recently on the blog, yep, not recently… life’s been too darned gloriously busy.  Some good stuff, other not so good stuff.  Let’s harken back to when the first bit of poo hit the fan..

On the fourth of July weekend, I had the glorious experience of 3 of the computers at my place go belly up.  

Yes, 3.  One was my wife’s laptop, another was my audio production machine, and the third was my web development machine.  This put a real kink in my workflow!   Unfortunately I did not have everything backed up.  I lost years of work; some really great flash source code I wrote, as well as some really super audio I have produced.

Computers have come down in price so much, it’s actually cheaper to purchase a replacement than having the old one fixed.  So, that’s what I did.  Bought all new machines.  I hope these last a couple of years, the other ones did last more than 3 years… so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Problem with that: not having everything backed up bit, it’s really very irresponsible for anyone to not have copies of their files backed up and stored somewhere other than your computer.  I was totally on the fence about doing it.  Not the fact that I needed to back stuff up, it was what KIND of backup device did I want to get.  I have a number of usb drives, but I have also had two 500 gig drives bomb on me in the past.  Luckily I had copies of the backups in their original places when the two backup drives went (at the same time mind you).

So, I’ve gone and ponied up the money for a 4 gig, raid 5, network attached device that I can back stuff up to and if a drive fails I can recover.  Nice.  According to Fedex it will arrive today, so then tonight I can spend all my time organizing and copying and fretting about where things will go.  Love it.
