The other night I was out getting a soda, in preparation to do some late night work.  I drove down to the local gas station and sitting out in front of the gas station were two guys, on milk crates, peering over a laptop.   Like I said it was night time, actually around 11pm and there were no other people around.  I thought to myself, this is very interesting.  So, I walked up and asked them a few questions.

The guy who owned the laptop worked for a towing company and did the grave shift.  He had recently gotten it and was seeking assistance from the gas station attendant on setting it up, or installing some software or some such thing.  I looked at the laptop and noticed it had one of those data access usb devices, you know… it’s a data cellphone more or less. 

It was awesome, and a bit different to see people on a late night shootin the breeze over a laptop.  Don’t see that much, but I’m sure it will be happening more and more.

The laptop was the personal computer of the tow truck driver, and a very valuable tool to have, especially when working the grave shift.  It kind of reminds me of some of the products I’ve seen as I stopped at the truck stop in Barstow, CA on the way to Las Vegas.  You can get all kinds of great gear, or in my case since I don’t drive a big rig, they would be classified as toys.

Just something I saw in passing, something unique and something I definitely wanted to share.  Computers have become more than just a fad (as some of my teachers in school would tell me), they are starting to become as necessary as a phone.  And on the other hand; phones are becoming as functional as computers.. but that’s for another post.
